Brian Dean is the founder of Backlinko. He was recently called “The world’s foremost expert on search engine optimization” by Success Magazine.
He follows this process to rank #1 on Google:
Step 1: Find 3 Keywords
Aim to find three low competition keywords.
You can find low competition long-tail (i.e. long and specific) keywords from AnswerThePublic.com.
Next, head over to Reddit. Check out the topics that your target audience is interested in. You can also search for these topics on AnswerThePublic.com to find related long-tail keywords.
Finally, explore trending topics in industries like tech, health, fashion, marketing, etc., on explodingtopics.com.
Finalize three not so competitive keywords.
Step 2: Create Epic Content
Buzzsumo and Brian found that 94% of online articles have zero links.
Therefore, use your shortlisted keywords to create not just ordinary but epic content.
Publish long and in-depth content. Long-form content gets an average of 77% more backlinks than short content.
Add a hook or a wow factor to your content. Example – a stat, a case study, a rare interview, a visualization, etc. A blogger will be more likely to link to your content.
Step 3: Keyword-optimize Your Content
Do not stuff your page with keywords. Use keywords to give the context of your text to Google.
Include your target keywords to important places such as title tag, first 100 words of your text, conclusion, etc.
Add LSI keywords (i.e. terms that show up next to your keywords) to your page. For example, if your keyword was “fresh prince”, LSI would be terms like Fresh Prince cast, Fresh Prince Bel-Air, etc.
Step 4: Optimize Your Content For Users
Earlier, Google would rank your page 100% based on backlinks. But now to rank well, create engaging content so users stick to your page.
Get straight to the point. Avoid long introductions. Structure your content well.
Focus on your content design. Users judge your page on design and then content. You don’t need to make it fancy. Simple and clean content designs are easy to read.
Step 5: Build Backlinks
Perficient Digital found that backlinking plays an important role in SEO even today. If you’ve diligently followed steps 1-4, you are set for backlinking.
Use the broken link building method. Find a broken link using the “check my links” extension for Google Chrome.
Find a post on your site to replace the dead link. A close match should work.
Send a super-personalized email to the relevant person and ask them to swap out the dead link for a link to your content.
Bonus Step: Use Unique Images
Reboot Online found that sites with unique images outrank the sites with stock images. Therefore, using stock photos can hurt your Google ranking.
Use unique images on your page whenever possible. Use pictures that you take with your phone. Or illustrations that you make in Photoshop. Or your screenshots. These images will directly impact your rankings.
Follow the above process step by step to rank on the first page on Google.
